Rana Gainer -- Illustrator
I am a professional illustrator and concept designer from Maryland via Virginia and Turkey. I work primarily in pen/ink and Adobe Photoshop, but I have experience in many different mediums including gouache, oil paint, watercolor, and graphite. I have also studied photography, graphic design, video game design, and typography. I am primarily interested in visual storytelling for books and games in particular.
All I want to do is make art for the rest of my life and get really good at playing Dungeons and Dragons. I was raised on technicolor MGM musicals and the Marx brothers. I was so moved by Valve's "Portal 2" that I wrote a 16-page paper about the psychology of the game for a college class (I got an A.)
My favorite artists include Alphonse Mucha, William Wallace Denslow, Harry Clarke, Claire Hummel, Dave McKean, and Arthur Rackham. My most prized possessions are my annotated anthologies of classic literature such as "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Wizard of Oz".

Kismet's Web
A world of inspiration and a desire to create visual 'themes' has pulled together all manner of printed matter and many different surfaces.
Paper has always been an important element in my life. The smell and feel of fresh, untouched pages; the watery blue lines in a composition notebook; other lives bound between two covers; the subtle differences between what is saved, and what is discarded.
I collected clippings, pictures, articles, anything that caught my eye. Folders full of them. Wherever I went, I created a paper environment for myself. Eventually, I began to collage furniture as well as smaller pieces. Then I found Etsy, and began to experiment a bit more. Creating a collage is very grounding, and almost hypnotic. I have been known to spend 10-14 hours at a time completely focused on a piece.
Today, collage serves me not only as a creative outlet, but in a therapeutic manner. I use the SoulCollage techniques to create personal pieces which help me examine my life from a different perspective.
